Finding the access road
- Pass the town of Apricale, and then follow the signs for Bajardo.
- After a few minutes' drive, you will find a small road leading down on your right-hand side (right before you can make a sharp left towards the cemetary). This is the access road to the house.
- The road is narrow, so drive carefully.
We find it easiest to park in front of the access gate. Just drive slightly past the gate (down the dirt track) and reverse back. Alternatively you can drive all the way down to the house and park there.
By plane
- The nearest airport is Nice Côte d'Azur (NCE), about 1 hour by car. Genoa (GOA) is about 2 hours.
- From Nice Airport there is a direct train to Ventimiglia — slightly over an hour — from the station right at the airport.
- From Ventimiglia station there is an hourly bus service to Apricale.
- Renting a car is still strongly recommended — the village is not well served by public transport.
Good to know
Inform the car rental agency that you will take the car abroad (into Italy) — this avoids insurance issues or penalties.
Keys & getting in
- Your key opens the main door right next to the driveway. Just take the steps down onto the terrace that is partially covered with a shade cloth. You can open the shades and windows to let some fresh air in. We recommend keeping the shutters closed during hot days to keep the house cool.
- The main water, gas and electricity are always on; we recommend running the taps for a few minutes to ensure you have fresh water. You might want to lower the temperature in the fridge and freezer a bit, we tend to turn those up when we are not there for a long time to save energy.
- If the house has been empty for a while before your arrival; please throw a 'septic tank tablet' into the downstairs toilet. Let it dissolve for a few minutes and then flush. This will help to restart the septic tank properly. You can find these tables in the garage (immediately around the corner on the left shelf).
- The house has active ventilation which is most likely on when you arrive (to keep moisture out of the house). Feel free to turn this off during your stay if the sound bothers you (the panel is on the right hand-side wall in the kitchen, the light button below the panel shuts off the whole system at once).
